Centering a tool in the lathe -
or "why do lathe operators carry a six inch rule when everything is measured in thousandths?"
![]() |
With the power turned OFF, place a six inch (150 mm) steel rule between the point of the tool and the work piece. When the rule is vertical (or perpendicular to the bed), the tool is on CENTER! |

If the rule leans toward the operator, then the tool is too LOW! |

If the rule leans away from the operator, then the tool is too HIGH! |
Yeah, the chucking is a little wierd - don't ask.
